Our Partners

Thomas E. Murtha, MBA, CPA

Managing Partner

Tom has been in the public accounting and tax preparation arena for over 25 years. Tom estimates that he has personally met with and prepared tens of thousands of tax returns during his career, and reviewed many tens of thousands more prepared by his employees.

Tom obtained his BS in Management at Long Island University and went on to earn his MBA in Accounting at St. Johns University while working as an assistant controller in the non-bank financial segment of a major New York City Bank.

Tom moved to Tampa, FL in 1987 and began building his public accounting business in Tampa. In 1999, Tom joined a CPA practice in a small town just south of Sarasota, Florida. He passed the CPA exam, receiving recognition from the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants and mention in the CPA Today magazine for scoring the 4th highest score in the state of Florida for that exam date.

In over 25 years of preparing tax returns, Tom has seen the complexity of tax filings increase many-fold. The recent Affordable Care Act (ACA) has added an unprecedented level of difficulty to the preparation of even a basic tax return.

Tom’s thorough understanding of the taxation of business sale transactions lead him into the marketing and sale of small businesses. Murtha and Murtha Mergers and Acquisitions, a division of Murtha and Murtha, LLC began in 2010. The M&A division specializes in discretely marketing and managing the sale of businesses ranging from small to lower middle market.

Tom spent over 15 years teaching accounting courses at Hillsborough Community College and the American Institute of Banking. He has been a frequent speaker at trade organization conferences and banking seminars and has offered such in-depth topics as “How to Build Your Business so You Can Leave it in Style”.

Tom has served on many community non-profit boards including the YMCA advisory board and is a past president of the Placida Rotary Club. Tom is currently a Trustee and President of a large animal shelter in SW Florida.

Patrick is a proud member of the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel where he has served on the board of directors as treasurer since 2012.
